Hey hows everyone, its been a long time since ive been on here and been building , fixing a sohc. I like the z6 . my first swap was into an 88 civic hatch back in 2004 id say. and loved it, wanted to turbo it back then but just diidnt happen. always been wanting to turbo an sohc since forever. looked it up back then and found very good how to threads but wasnt smart enough to save them all. there all gone now cant find the ones anymore. Well im back into the scene and girlfriend wants to sell her 95 civic ex and i cant let her do that!!! ahahha she wants a 4 runner.. and also got a civic ef with a bullfrog head on it that runs, but has a problem with the throttle . when pushing the gas it just revs high thinking it could be the y8 mani but not sure. my brrother has that and wants to sell it too but i cant let him do that cuz i want to make my fantasies come true and build and have a turbo sohc. ahahha so its time to turbo . but gotta and need some good threads to read up on before i start building want to do it right .and want to learn how to tune. i want to run about 8 ,10psi on stock internals. but im planing to build the engine . any info would be a great help. i mind wants and needs all the info you can give THANKS

Hi there

Alright

New boy here, just thought I'd say hello as probably going to have some questions soon.

I'm a tinkerer and have the Civic, a Land Rover Discovery and am a bike nut too, never happier than when I'm in the garage with the missus handing me a well earned brew.

I've got a 97 Civic 1.5 (D15Z8 I believe?) with 162k on the clock, had it since May 2008, picked it up with exactly 80,500 miles on the clock.

The missus just remodelled the passenger wing for me using my Land Rover, which was nice of her. I love the car to bits, only trouble I've had from it was during 2011 but everything is consumable at some point isn't it.

Failed the MOT for the first time on emsissions, the cat needed replacing and of course I just had to have the model where the cat is part of the exhaust manifold didn't I instead of the cheaper pipe version ; ) , and the clutch went in June so I changed that and the windscreen craked about a month or so ago and none of the door courtesy switches work, so I went to a scrappy and bought a set of four which worked for a week and now the car thinks all four doors are permanently open.. DUH .

Apart from that every 6k it gets oil change and the then next one is sparkies also and then next one is coolant also. That's kept it running fine over the past 80k miles.

It's starting to show it's age now though, burns a bit of oil and the MPG isn't as good as it was, so I'm planning on getting a compression tester and a leak down tester in the next month or so so will be looking up info on that.

Cheers

Mild build D16A6 - oil consumption & oil pressure concerns

Hey guys -- first let me thank you for the great information & helpfulness that I'm seeing on this forum. I hope that I can eventually contribute to the collective knowledge here

To give you some background, I am 22 years old but have been "diseased" since I was a youngin'. Performed my first (assisted) full rebuild at 14 and have had several other motors in various degrees of "torn apart" over the years. I've always been into 'dollar cars' and I figure if I can't fix it myself then I don't need to buy it in the first place. This is my first dive into the guts of a Honda, so bear with me.

The motor is a recently rebuilt (of unknown assembler skill/knowledge) D16A6 that came out of a friend's CRX Si (he bought it with all the work already done). It is purported to be 13:1 CR but I have my doubts. I talked briefly with the person responsible for building the motor --- he claims that all bearings, seals, gaskets, etc were replaced with all Honda OEM parts and that many of the common wear parts were replaced. Here is his report, verbatim:

-block & head decked (unknown amount)
-block guard installed
-3 angle valve job
-Crank turned (but then he went on to say that it "wasn't enough to need oversize bearings." I'll get to this...)
-13:1 pistons (unknown brand/metal composition)
-new OEM valve guides
-stock valves lapped
-honed cylinder walls
-stock size OEM bearings

From that list, and having a little knowledge about the A6 bottom end, I would think that this thing is good to go for a while. However, before it was pulled from the car, my friend was having all sorts of oil issues. First, it began smoking. From our discussions, the way the car smoked makes me lean toward bad valve seals (heaviest smoking on acceleration after extended vacuum condition decelerating) but I'm not ruling out faulty rings/etc. since I don't know the quality of the assembly. Then, his oil pressure light started flickering at low idle. I helped him replace his OP sensor in hopes that it was screwy (though I knew deep inside that the chances were slim) and it continued. He switched to 10w-30 oil and replaced the oil pump and it only came on at very low RPMs (bogging coming into 1st, etc.) but still came on nonetheless. It should also be noted that it popped a head gasket at some point and he put a new one on. And then he bought a B16 lol.....quitter. And that's where I am. For what it's worth, the motor ran GREAT and pulled very hard for a D series and didn't make any (to my knowledge) "bad" noises at all. It's all kinda confusing...

My poor little EG has eaten its second tranny and I figure that the 278k D15B7 deserves a nice retirement and if I'm going to go to the trouble of yanking another transmission, then I'm just going to drop the whole dropout. BUT, I don't want to put a ticking time bomb in my beloved daily (I am a reformed SR20 guy....so I know plenty about ticking time bombs) so I come to you for advice: what do I do? I've already ordered OEM valve seals (I couldn't get a straight answer out of the guy as to whether he replaced them or not, and the motor did have 200k+ before rebuild) but how do I address the oil pressure issue? Is it possible that his machinist led him wrong in telling him that the amount turned off the crank did not warrant oversize bearings? If I need to pull the bottom end apart, I will, but I don't want to if there's something I'm missing here. If I do need to pull it apart, is the best plan of action to plasti-gage and go from there?

Everybody likes pics, so here are some that may help. Any ideas on these pistons? Anything you can tell from looking at the CCs? Pics of the car added to confirm that we're not dealing with a dirtball kid throwing a $10 motor together and the EG8 will be the new home if you all bring me hopeful news!

*judging by the crap that's on the cylinder wall, I'm assuming this is also just crap on top of the piston and not detonation damage. I wasn't present when these pictures were taken (when the head gasket popped)

No power - engine loading up?

Have a 1994 VX, with the VTEC-e..

It was having some serious issues with having no power in any gear, engine shaking, blowing smoke out the exhaust..

I rebuilt the engine, bearings, rings, etc. had the head cleaned, new valves, etc. intake and TB cleaned as well.. new clutch.. etc.

All back together and take for a test drive... it is experiencing the SAME thing, car feels like it is loading up, meaning the power is there, it is just not moving, It will back -fire, through the exhaust when I downshift from any gear...

I have tried to elimiate the following:

Ignition - SP are new, SP wires are new and resistance tested, dist is okay..
Air - I ran it with no air cleaner for 2 miles, only a slight improvement in acceleration but the problem still is there.
For some reason there were 2 CATs on this car, the stock one at the manifold and an aftermarket one. I gutted the one at exhaust and it did give a bit more power, but the problem still exists.

I can floor the car and it still is a slug.

There is no more blowing smoke or anything, the car idles smoothly.. etc.

I need to suggestions or if it is a problem common to the VX with the VTEC-e??????

I will try to take off the exhaust pipe and see if it runs any better, it could have the 2nd CAT clogged, it is possible seeing the previous owner of this car did not respect cars or Hondas..

D-Series No Start/Running Bad Problem

Okay I have recently just acquired a 1994 Civic LX Sedan it has the D15B7 in it and when I first got it ran okay but was lacking power and idle would drop and go back up. Now, the car will not start unless I give it gas while I'm turning it over and dies right as soon as I let off the gas. The spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. But, I cannot figure out what is wrong with it, any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks

New Guy Needs Help

Hey everyone, New to sohc honda and to honda really.

I have a 1990 Civic Hatch with a 1.5 tbi that i use as a race car.
I really have no idea what bits and pieces are interchangable and from what years, but hope you folks can give me some direction as how to get some more punch out of the car. I use it on a short track oval. mostly using second gear, but sometimes into third. Which cars have different ratios for the trans? can i use a multi port block/head with a tbi intake? Im a nissan tech and just dont have a lot of honda info available to me.

Thanks

Over heating & oil in the coolant

What's up everyone. My 00' EX overheats in stop-and-go traffic. I did a coolant flush, & changed the thermostat but still overheats. When I did the flush I noticed lots of oil in the coolant.

Now I'm thinking head gasket, so I bring it to a mechanic who I trust. He did a compression/leak down test but said it's not my head gasket (no white smoke either) & thinks it's a small crack in my block or head. Both of us agree that if that's the case I'll probably need a new engine.
What do you guys think? Where do you think the leak could be coming from? Are there any other types of test to figure out where the leak if coming from?

I'm tired of my 3.0 V6 Turbo desiel Merc Benz using LESS fuel than my D13B2!

I'm thinking of making it more interesting: with a big turbo.

There's a handful of these already converted to Pgmfi in europe that can be found on google.

The plan is to have performance at high revs under boost and 1.3 economy off boost.

Some other rust proofing i've considered: fibreglass doors/ hood & wings.

http://www.newhorizonstyling.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=95&Itemid=41

I'd like to know what D15/16 parts are interchangable. It's proving difficult since these engines never came to the US except in the HF 1G CRX.

The cost of fuel over here is approx. £1.50/ ltr!! It's time to do something about it.
