i kind of stumbled into this forum today. i'm a long time member of a few other honda specific forums, but i've grown tired of the nuisance of the folks you seem to keep out here. sweet!

anyway, name's Mark. i've got a few years of vocational honda/acura service and repair experience. i currently work for an automotive bearing manufacturer and service the family fleet of single cam hondas (with the exception of my sister who got a good deal on an '90 Integra..). i've made minor improvements to my DX civic coupe including D16Y8 intake and exhaust manifolds, (the way the Y7 should have come originally).

the plans for the future and the current project already 2-3 years in the making...

i started with an F23A1 with low miles
...acquired the Bisimoto F2D kit
...K20 pistons
...rebuilt F22A4 head
...H23 intake manifold (began porting and removing the IAB plates)
...chipped a P06 myself
...installed Kaizenspeed's balance shaft elimination kit
...waiting on a Delta 272 cam, DSM 450cc injectors, some sort of exhaust and a good tune.

pics and progression of the build are in a thread here. but i'm thinking of moving it to it's own blog soon.

i look forward to intelligent discussion and debate.

What's "intelligent discussion and debate?"

Does that exist on a Honda forum?

:P

Welcome. I'll have to check out your thread when I am not so tired.

haha, my expectations are pretty low i guess. you're use of clear English and punctuation is "intelligent" enough for me.

Oh. I qualify. How sad. :P

JB weld does NOT belong in an oil pump. Buy a 1lb. container of devcon, or find some single use Belzona brand epoxy packets. If you haven't done that already.

And . . . YOUR the dude who did the valve-piston-notcher thing. Cool.

yeah i couldn't bring myself to use JB weld. it just didn't feel right... i picked up a tube that says Devcon on it but it's not two part and it doesn't say specifically for aluminum. ever come across this, and is it the same product?

Good. Thank you!

Devcon makes a whole load of epoxies. Is there a part number on the tube?

it's called Devcon metal patch & fill compound. the numbers at the top of the packaging are S-50 / 50345.

hmm, maybe it's best to get the stuff known to work...

Thank you, Jesse. Yes. "You're." However, that was an ooooold reference to something on another forum that none of y'all know about. I forget sometimes . . .

That Devcon product is decent, but, I would heartily recommend the 2 part Devcon aluminum epoxy.

as if i had some form of tinkering ADD, here's something completely different! i've been pondering and tinkering with this lately.

i've already cracked open a like-new OE muffler, carefully removed the guts, cut a piece of perf. tubing into 3 sections, and priced the remaining materials. i've also taken enough measurements to know this will all fit nicely with little modification involved. the center section will have some combination of stainless steel wool and fiberglass.

piping will be 2" for the first try and will suit the modest Y7 for testing purposes. if all goes well and it sounds nice i'll put together a 2.5" for the F23.

progress is a wonderful thing.

i'll work on getting some real pics up later today. maybe even some of the F23 mocked up on the stand. i've got it up there fore some timing cover measurements which will lead to some fun, low-budget vacuum forming :)

Plastic valve cover? Sounds scary.

that would be... i wouldn't trust a vacuum formed part (or thermoplastic) to form a good seal or hold up to the heat and oil.

but what i do intend to make is an acrylic timing cover. when i considered how much hacking i would have to do to get an original F23 cover to fit in the civic bay i decided to find a different solution. i know for some that solution is running without a cover, but i've see what foreign objects can do when they find their way between a moving belt and a spinning crank cog... no good! so all my motors will use covers.

here are some of those images..

harvesting the perforated core from a burnt out eBay "fart can"
Posted Image

at top: civic DX muffler, to the right: integra GSR muffler. GSR has larger piping, but it's noticeably heavier.. it's also the one currently in use.
Posted Image

this is what came off to get to the inside of the DX muffler. i was surprised to find two layers of outer casing to cut through.
Posted Image

the mystical three chamber reactive muffler's inner workings... outlet- top right, inlet- lower left.
Posted Image

another view. here is where the inlet dumps directly, then the smallest at the bottom links all three chambers.
Posted Image

the guts carefully removed..
Posted Image

so they can be pounded into submission! those little weld beads have unbelievable penetration!!
Posted Image

here is one divider wall separated and back in the case with the three perf. core sections. my favorite part of this image though is the "HONDA" stamping on the back of the case.. :)
Posted Image

Because I live in a new development and the houses are built pretty close together, I try to avoid aggravating the neighbors by limiting my use of the angle grinder. then other plate will have to wait until tomorrow.

Dude. An Acrylic valve cover. So, you are going to vacusuck a mold to pour a cover?

Very interesting thoughts on a muffler. I am looking forward to seeing how much fun you have welding on those used pieces. :P

nope. no valve cover. timing belt cover. i have some 1/8" acrylic sheet to try with. i don't think i'll have to pour a mold, i'll just use the vacuum formed part.

yeah, i'm sure i'll need a lot of grinding and brushing to get the used stuff to weld decent.
